Why the Andhra people shouldn't give up !

In my last Blog, I've explained some of the profound Misconceptions about the "Telangana statehood demand". Though I'm satisfied with the response, I'm slightly remorseful that I've been a little harsh in some of my phrases. Nevertheless my Intentions were not to hurt the sentiments, but only to give a stronger opinion of mine.

However, there are some other unattended questions in my last blog, which are now frequently raised by Telangana people/politicians. The first half of this blog is about more such misconceptions.

In the second half of the blog, I will be explaining about the Andhra's point of view of Telangana demand, Like, How devastating it would be for the Andhra region if Telangana with Hyderabad is conceded.

Indeed It's indispensable for all Telugu people to be more aware about the Pros and Cons of the Telangana issue, I urge you all to be more knowledgeable about "Why Telangana" or "why united AP". Don't just take a neutral stand, don't just leave it to fate.To say the least, the state bifurcation directly impacts the lives of 8 crore people of Andhra Pradesh. Please read this blog and share your knowledge.

Quick Introspection :-

Pre-Independence ,the subcontinent of India has been ruled by many different ethnic groups, Princely kingdoms, British presidencies, Sultanates etc and each of them imposed their own administrative divisions on their respective regions. Rightafter the Union Of India is formed, The country saw violent internal demands, seeking new States. Not a few, but many of them.

To study the issue, to examine the feasibility, viability and validity of such demands, the government formed a committee SRC in 1956(States Re-organizing Committee). The committee gave  nod to some of these demands, leading to the formation of new states, mostly the linguistic states(having same common language) like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu , Kerala , Maharastra, Gujarat etc and the non-linguistic states were formed on administrative grounds like Bihar, Madhyapradesh, etc. However there were some declined demands like Gorkhaland, Vidarbha, Saurastra ,Telangana etc ( Refer to the section : list of aspiring states for more details).

These aspirants of new states, have agitated on a timely fashion to revive their hopes of a new state, but the government was Hell bent to carve out states on non-lingustic grounds and for the reasons better known to them. However it can be said without thinking that, since all the  linguistic demands were accepted, the only genuine reason on which a statehood demand sounds valid is administrative viability i.e for a smooth functioning of the administration of the region, a region which is far off from the capital city seeking a separate state is definitely valid, viable and welcomed by one and all. This is exactly the case with all the three new states that were formed during the BJP's tenure. In 2000 three new states were created; Chhattisgarh (1 November 2000) was created out of eastern Madhya PradeshUttaranchal (9 November 2000), since renamed Uttarakhand, was created out of the Hilly regions of northwest Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand (15 November 2000) was created out of the southern districts of Bihar

Currently there  are 20 plus new active demands for new states. Like Vidarbha, Gorkhaland, Saurastra , Telangana, Coorg, Bodoland etc. All these regions do seek a separate statehood , on the grounds a) Administrative viability b) Self governance , but the odd one among this list, the only exception is Telangana demand, as they seek Capital City Hyderabad which is well within Telangana.

However the Pro- Telangana agitators have their own explanations for their demand, such as uneven development, step-motherly treatment , self rule, water share etc. But , honestly all these points are not and will not be acceptable for a separate state. All that you can agitate is for having your demands met, about the injustices (if at all found true), but you just cannot agitate for a separate state showing these reasons, which I think aren't applicable at the first place.

Hyderabad is undoubtedly the heart of Andhra Pradesh, A mere saying that Hyderabad belongs to Telangana just because it is in Telangana is like people of Travancore asking for a share in the Padmanabaswamy Treasure just because it is found in Travancore Temple.

Telangana people have to realize and agree the fact that, Andhraites have made a more-than-significant contribution to the Hyderabad. Needless to say, This is exactly why majority of the people of Andhra vehemently oppose Telangana formation.

The Loud and clear fact is that Andhra people have a legitimate share of their own and a righteous claim over the city of Hyderabad.

Telangana Misconceptions continued

Pre Andhra-Telangana Merger :-

Accusation :- The Telangana people were merged much against their wishes & what we are asking today is Just the Telangana state which existed before.

I reiterate one of my points, that The demand for a Telugu speaking state is not a new demand and has been pre dominant both during colonial British rule and during the atrocious Nizam's rule. The demand for the formation of a complete Telugu province in the name of Visalandhra in fact was
more overwhelming in Hyderabad state than in the Madras Presidency.

Historically, it can be traced that the demand for Visalandhra gained direction from the mid-19th century with the emergence of new classes - the peasantry, who assumed the torch
bearer ship of the movement. The rise of the peasant classes has been the result of a boom (or a spurt) in agriculture which became possible, a reality, due to availability of irrigation -the product of the construction of anicuts across the Godavari and the Krishna rivers. The irrigation schemes thus laid the basis for intensive cultivation of rice and other cash crops, generating consequently a substantial base for the emergence of the peasant classes. It was these emerging classes which
supported the idea of a separate province, Visalandhra, for the Telugu-speaking people, as they were perhaps the hardest hit if industrialists and capitalists expand and sprawl across.

Telangana region never existed as a state , at any point of time in the History, it never did. It was always a part of the Hyderabad State, untill in 1956. When it was trifurcated. Burgula Ramakrishna was the last and the only chief minister of the Hyderabad state.

Historically Telugu speaking people were united :-

Accusation :- Historically the Telangana people were separated and were never united !

The origins of an organised Telugu people dates back to the Satavahana rule of 236 B.C - 218 A.D. Until the advent of the British in the early-seventeenth century, Andhra came under the rule of several dynasties. The establishment of a factory in Masulipatnam in 1611heralds the beginning of colonial foothold in Andhra, strengthened with the death of Aurangzeb and the consequent disintegration of the Mughal Empire from 1707 onwards. The transfer of the  Circar districts to the Company in 1766 and the Rayalaseema by the Nizam in 1800, perhaps marks the beginning of the splitting of the Telugu people. The demand for uniting the Andhra people came up in the present century right from the beginning, when the partition of Bengal in 1905 made people firmly believe that the progress of a linguistic group would be hindered by their being placed under different administrations

Which means after the advent of Nizams, Andhraites were separated for a period 1800 – 1956 , roughly for around 160 years. The British didn't want to disturb the Hyderabad state as it perfectly suited it's way of functioning i.e "The divide and rule policy". It could not only divide the Telugus, but also kannadas and Marathas. Thus giving advantage to control the masses during freedom agitations.

So, Why Telangana is suppressed

Accussation :- Telangana people were "content"  before the formation of Andhra Pradesh ! Their current backwardness is only, exclusively because of Andhra politicians because of which they were left contended.

The uneven development of Telangana consciousness is attributed to be a product of historical factors. The three principal regions of Andhra Pradesh - Coastal, Rayalaseema and Telangana districts are marked by different socio-economic backgrounds.

Since the two Telugu speaking regions SeemaAndhra and Telangana were separated for over a period of 180 years, over the due course of time they acquired their own  distinct social characteristics and administrations.

Andhra regions remained under the British rule for these 180 years and were exposed to colonial modern development, have had access to the western English education but to the contrary Telangana people having lived under the exploiting feudal rule of the " Nizam of Hyderabad" , further subsided by Dora system ( where in the Dora is the sole owner of lands of an entire village, while the rest worked under him for a sack of grains) , Patel Patwari system etc.The economic progress was such that there was a a wide gap in regional development. With the rapid rise in the agrarian community in Andhra, the importance of education was widely known as early as the 1900s. The education awareness and access to the British built schools and colleges in Madras presidency, gave birth to many Industrialists and capitalists from Andhra regions.

The post-reorganization of states , where in British provinces and Non-British provinces were merged witnessed the same as that of Andhra and Telangana (like Gulbarga and Karnataka , Aurangabad and Maharastra) as aptly pointed out, the fusion between "people accustomed to life-styles appropriate to monsoon-dependent subsistence agriculture in non democratically ex-Princely states" on the one hand with "the industrially and agriculturally progressive people of ex-British provinces"  It is perhaps in this fusion that the brewing identity crisis and regional polarity can be located.

I know most of the Telangana people will scrap this " suppression story" as a cock and Bull story, well, I've a video proof, The award winning movie " Maa Bhoomi " portrays how the people of Telangana were slaved by  Nizams, Doras, Chota-Doras etc. The movie is based on a true life story of a Telanganaite in Siripuram , Nalgonda Dist. Some scenes are extremely touching and heart breaking.

Ironically, My native town in Guntur Dist is hardly 50 kms away from Siripuram (Andhra region), After I've seen this movie, the first thing I did was, I've asked my GrandMom to watch it, and she says she never saw such kind of feudalistic suppression over the villagers. Honestly, She cried twice at 18:15 & 27:55 , the movie is touching and emotional. Do watch it.

Movie -  Maa Bhoomi (Telugu movies with English ST)

Surprisingly, the Telangana politicians claim that they are fighting for freedom now and they were better off before the mergal with Andhra in Nizam's rule ! Especially Nayani Narasmiha Reddy (TRS Politburo Member) who said this many times on TV. Can somebody tell me the average IQ of Telangana politicians ? Only DeshDrohis can say those words.

And yeah, the tacit relationship between Razakars and Doras in the movie, explains why the Doras in Telangana are Urdu speakers. ( That explains why KCR is good with Urdu).

The Dora system is abolished, The Patel-Patwari system is omitted (As late as1985 during TDP's regime). You're  electing your own MLAs and MPs, you are voting them, 50% of cabinet ministers in AP have always been from Telangana, Just because the CM is from Andhra/Seema does that mean you don't have freedom ?  From last 20 years, Chandra Babu Naidu, YS Reddy, Kiran Kumar Reddy are ruling , and these al hail from Rayalaseema, Does that mean Andhra people are freedom less ? Does that mean Rayalaseema has progressed during their Rule. No things remain indifferent, they will be indifferent even if Telangana CM rules for the next 20 years. Trust me, you can count me on that.

Sometimes I do feel that, If the Telanganaites blame Andhraites for the backwardness, they should be equally held responsible for the backwardness in Srikakulam, Vizayanagram, Kadapa, Anantapur, Kurnool, Chitoor ? Since any given time there are 50% of decision making cabinet minister from Telangana as well?

1973 Jai Andhra Movement :-

Accusation :- The Jai Andhra movement in 1973 is a false movement only created to further supress the Telanganaites, but not for a separate Andhra desam. (I'm giving this detailed)

I've read and learned that the Telangana people think that ' Jai Andhra movement" is a swindling movement born only to mislead and beguile the prime minister Indira Gandhi.

They further claim that, The real intention behind this movement is only to abolish Mulki rules which otherwise should righteously belong to the Telanganaites. They think that the agitation took place only because Indira Gandhi was against separate state(s).

These are exactly the words of the " so called Idealogue of Telangana movement ". Prof Jayashankar, the man who is severly revered both for his brains and the arguments given by him for a separate state. Also been coveted with the title " Father of Telangana ". (watch the Video and subtitles)

I outrightedly deny this man and his preaching. This is a classic example of how this man blatantly distorted the facts and manipulated the statistics to polarize Telangana people. He says the budget of Telangana is far more than the Andhraites , that is why Andhra people were after Telangana, how came he says in the same video that Andhra people have "Money power" ? Isn't it the taxes come from people who are rich? .such a liar.

TRS party widely distributed a pamphlet to almost everyone in Telangana, reflecting the statics of Jobs, Literacy rates, schools, colleges, budget of Telangana, this very man is the script of such wrong numbers. A Telangana professor by Name " Nalamotu Chakravarthy" exposes this man more than anybody else, you should Google his name and find facts.

I agree that it has now become a people's movement , however the question is that how it was built? How was the vendetta filled? What was the conduit ?

I have purchased an article from New York Times to learn more about "Jai Andhra agitation", which is obviously is one of the most reliable source you can count upon.

An article about ' Jai Andhra Movement" published in Feb 1973 on New York Times. (Refer to the scanned 1973 paper). Which briefs that, The "Jai Andhra" agitation started in the month of January 1973 and lasted till the month of March 1973. In the course of the agitation (one of the biggest agitations post independence) 55 people were shot dead by the police in February alone. The famous politician Kakani Subramaniam defied the orders of Indira Gandhi, resigned from cabinet to join the agitation in Guntur. He was killed in police firing as well, but wrongly shown to the media as death due to "Heart Attack".  The city of Vijayawada which was the nerve center of the agitation, has been closed for 3 months.. All institutions were closed, Telephones connections were snapped, road ways were blocked etc. By the end of March the Death Toll was more than 150. (Remember these are all adults who were shot on roads.). While the Andhraites were agitating vociferously , the Telangana MLAS didn't resign in favour of separation , nor they supported the agitation completely.

Not a quest for the identity !

Accusation :- The Telangana people are in a quest of saving their identity , for which a separate state is a must.

Lately the Telangana movement has taken a new turn, the politicians are trying to save themselves from proven statics about exponential growth rate, when their claim of underdevlopment has been squashed by experts. To salvage , they say there is a dire need to protect the Culture, Traditions, Customs of the Telangana people.

The demand for separate Telangana state will not under any means fall under the argument that there is a need for the identity of the Telangana community to be preserved. People from all ethnic backgrounds live in Telangana, Telangana as such the whole region doesn't have a unique culture or a tradition, there are many differences within the region and among the people. I see four Major recognizable cultures within Telangana.

a) Mahboob Nagar is so closely linked to the people of Rayalaseema. Their eating habits, marriage customs, speaking slang is very much like a Typical Rayalaseema guy.

b) Khammam is adjacent to the coastal region of Andhra and hardly there are customs akin to core Telangana districts like Nizamabad, Karimnagar etc.

The whole of tribal belt in northern Telangana is completely different to the entire mainstream region.

My point is not just to point out the differences, I don't think that it is possible for a region compromising of 3.5 crores and having a single unique culture.

The other argument we often see from KCR is that they speak a different version of Telugu ( Telugu with a little urdu) and their songs, cultures have been constantly ignored by Andhra media, cinema etc. This is not true. On a regular basis the Telangana is portrayed in Telugu movies.

Batukamma Song in a Telugu movie in 1971

The same trend is even noted in other parts of Andhra Pradesh, like the People in Anantapur, Mahboob Nagar speak Telugu a little with Kannad mix, Infact most of them do speak two languages. In districts like Chitoor the Telugu slang sounds like that of Tamil, they do use some Tamil words.

This is an inevitable trend, the blend of languages do arise when you deviate from the main stream Telugu speaking land which is supposedly the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.

Will It open Pandora's box ?

Accusation :- If the Telangana demand is met, no new problems will arise. The demand is not against National interests as we aren't seeking a country.

We all are brought up with the notion that Country comes first and then anything else. Personally I firmly believe that even giving one such a state will open Pandora's box. Which infact will give a fresh momentum to the other similar statehood moments, similar separatist demands. Be it for the Good or the Bad.

The list of Aspiring states in India!

North india – Ladakh, Harit pradesh (Paschimanchal), Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Sonanchal, central up ( awadh ), Mithilanchal ( mithila ) , Bhojpur, Vindhya pradesh

West India – Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan, Saurastra (saurasthra ), Kutch, Maru pradesh (desert land )

East India – Gorkhaland, Kamtapur, Bodoland, Karbi anglong, Koshal ( kosal ), Greater cooch behar

South India – Greater Rayalseema, Coastal Andhra , Telengana, kongu Nadu, coorg, North karnataka, Coastal karnataka and Coastal kerela.

However, the T politicians put up a brave front (specially TRS MLA Etela Rajendra) , saying  Telangana issue cannot be against the National interest, We are only asking for a state constitutionally and within the Indian country etc etc. Here is the reason why.

After the announcement  made by the union minister Chidambram in Favour of Telangana on Dec 9th , there was a sporadic unrest in the Gorkhaland and in the Vidarbha demanding to carve out a state on par with Telangana. Many people staged Dharnas and Rallies over night,  Isn't this a fresh momentum?  Some leaders went on a hunger strike on the very next day.Such a development might cause a new stir among new regions and which might soon become a law and order issue!

If Andhra Pradesh is divided it would be the first Linguistic state to be divided in India, which might spurn off many such demands.

Note:- The uniqueness of the Telangana demand is that, there is no other aspiring state except Telangana which also wants a capital city.( Check the Map, the list of aspiring states are far off from the capital city)

Only four Andhra Investors are blocking Telangana

Accusation :-  There are only 4 investors (probably L. Rajgopal, K .S Rao, Subarami Reddy, R . Samba Siva rao) behind , United AP movement and only to shield their wealth in Hyderabad and all the rest of the people from Andhra are okay with a separate Telangana as they are seeking their own capital.

First of all " my ass " we need a new capital, please don't decide what we want and please stop talking on our behalf as if you read our minds. Second of all I don't know why you have chosen the number  " 4 ".

I'm surprised, why only four, there are thousands of investors from Andhra in Hyderabad, If it is a concern to these four it should obviously be a concern to the rest as well. They've  scooped down to a level to proclaim that United AP movement is an artificial movement and only few goons are behind this movement besides they agitate only when the Telangana people agitate.

For that matter, the real agitators in 2009 Osmania University were not students, the agitation was initially built by Naxals. I mean look at those people during the 2009 agitation, aren't they old enough not to be students? Even the research students in US won't be that old. Clearly the Naxals have been inflicting the Telangana agitation timely, Now it slowly went into the hands of common people.

Every one out of Ten families in Andhra is settled in Hyderabad and the remaining 9 families are dependent in Hyderabad in some or the other way. Of course there will be a phobia and certain amount of scare, if they are told overnight that " Hyderabad is not yours anymore". It's the students who would turn out to be the biggest losers more than anybody else out of this. so, Naturally all of these will agitate and bring an indirect pressure via politicians.

Here is my answer to why do they don't agitate on their own, why only after the Telangana agitation. Because of the only reason that, as long as there is no Telangana agitation it's  evident that the state will be in the status-Quo which means united.

The repercussions of course are directly related to the developments in Telangana.

Clearly all the people of Andhra, Rayalaseema are the stakeholders of the city of Hyderabad, their tax money was used in building the Hyderabad infrastructure, be it the flyovers, outer ring road etc. So nobody can just say your time is over "you will have to leave the city" etc .

600 People have died for Telangana cause !

Accusation :-  600 people have died cause of the delay in the formation of Telangana, How many more you want to die.

It's a sad thing, people are resorting to the extreme step, I become very sad, everytime I see a Teenage suicide dying for the Telangana demand. Specially the Srikanth Chary's incident ! Like anyone else I condemn such steps.

For an issue as small as 800 acres of illegal land owned by YSR ,there was a vociferous debate in assembly ,Intense altercations, Walking out, Barging, Boycotting assembly, etc. over here we are talking of diving the state !! Did the TRS ever  handle it democratically? Did they ever discuss the For &  Against points of this statehood demand in issue? No they didn't , They just came onto roads. Even the 2001 formed states have discussed in assembly and a consensus was formed in the Assembly. But here we are talking about an aspiring state with Hyderabad. Not even for a second they thought of convincing the Andhraites, straightaway  separatists demand a state ?

And yes! the 600 odd people who have committed suicides, wait no , the 600 people have been killed by KCR, I believe in this. Tell me, If there was no such thing like TRS, would these people die? Remember there was no single Death for Telangana from 1970 - 2009. Why suddenly so many have taken the extreme step in last two years?  Only because they were emotionally charged by TRS. Had the TRS employed the parliamentary method of arguing and convincing in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and in state Assembly. They wouldn't have died, certainly not.

Please don't blame other's for death. please stop saying Andhraites killed these, CBN killed these etc.

Now the Telangana politicians say 600 people have died, so give us Telangana ! Eh ! First of all they've died only because of these politicians.  Certainly many Hate speeches were given by KCR himself and he did say likesuicide" is an option. " Even if these tender minds have died, that doesn't mean that the demands of politicians are met.

I've still not come across a single valid reason about why the state needs to be bifurcated, the T politicians cannot fool everyone by fudging statistics and history, Not everyone. why should we Andhraites bow to such people and such agitations ?

Why the People of Andhra Shouldn't give up !

  • Let's not unlearn the Madras lessons :-

When the Telugu speaking people wanted a separate state out of Madras Presidency (of course on Linguistic grounds!) they were asked to sacrifice. They were asked to give up the Madras city. Despite the fact that the city has been geographically and historically been a part of the Andhra region.

Madras City earlier known as the Chennapatnam, first formed in 1639, when a Telugu King Damerla Venkadri Nayudu granted the British, permission to build a factory and warehouse for their trading enterprises. A year later, the British built Fort St George, which became the nucleus of the growing colonial city.

As the population kept on growing, the city became an indivisible mixture of Tamil and Telugu cultures. In 1953 the city of Madras compromised 58% of Telugus, Most of the industrial development is widely credited to the Andhraites. It was difficult to determine who should possess it. Panagal raja a Tamilian and the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency in the early 1920s said that the Cooum River should be kept as a boundary, giving the northern portion to the Andhras and the southern portion to the Tamils. In 1928, Sir C. Sankaran Nair sent a report to the Central Council discussing why Madras does not belong to the Tamils. The increasing political dominance of the Tamils from early 1920s at both Central and State level politics caused Madras to remain in the Tamil region. According to the JPC report (Jawahar Lal Nehru, Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya, C. Rajagopalachari)  Telugu people should leave Madras if they want a separate Andhra state.

River Cooum separating North and South Madras

In order to safe guard the interests of the Andhra people in Madras state, there was a popular movement called " Madras Manade" (Madras is ours) agitating for the city of Madras. Personally I believe that Madras should have gone to the Telugu speaking people and that too to the Rayalaseema Region as it's capital. Indeed in 1953 there was an agitation in Rayalaseema demanding for a separate state with Madras as it's capital. However these cracks among the Telugu people of Madras state were later bridged by Pattabhi Sitaramaiah.

Cause of it's coastal location and the importance for the sea trade then, Chenna Patanam was more and more sought after by the people of all the three regions i.e Andhra region, Tamil region and Kannad region. With in no time it went onto become the 4th largest city in the British Raj. Even today it is the 4th biggest city.

Rest is History, the travails of Andhra people after loosing the Madras city are crystal clear, we didn't have any up-to-the-mark infrastructure for a capital city among the two-tier cities and towns. All the rest were far away from the qualities of a Capital city. In 1953 they have decided Kurnool as the capital of the Andhra region, partly to soothen the Rayalaseema statehood demand. However the Judiciary was run from Guntur, Administration from Kurnool etc. The people couldn't get the share of Taxes being paid by the Telugus in Madras city, as a result the newly formed state was on a budget deficit.

Do you want to see the same thing again, despite not of your fault ? Hell no.

  • Illogical stance on Hyderabad.

దున్నేవాడిది భూమి అయినప్పుడు , పండిఇచేవాడిది పంట అయినప్పుడు , అబివృద్ది చేసేవాడిది పట్నం ఎందుకు కాదు ?

Both for the Andhraites and Telanganaites , the bone of contention is Hyderabad. As long as the Telangana people won't accept the fact that the Andhra people have been instrumental in Hyderabad's modern development with the Taxes of Andhraites and as long as they don't give up their illogical explanation that Hyderabad was already developed by Nizam's, look at our palaces etc. There is no point in heeding to the demands of Telangana people.

The credit for the much boasted olden development of Hyderabad won't entirely go to Telangana , but only a part of it, a quarter of it. This is because of the Taxes paid by their ancestors were much less when compared to the taxes paid by their counterparts of erstwhile Hyderabad state, a mere 25 - 30% taxes came from the working class of Telangana and 75 -80 % came from Aurangabad and Gulbarga. Without a doubt the resources, manpower of the entire region of Hyderabad state were used/exploited to build the city of Hyderabad. Even the Non Telangana , Non Andhra played a crucial role in building the old and the modern Hyderabad.

The old palaces, museums built by Nizams are not giving any employment, aren't contributing to the Taxes. The development between 1998 - 2010 is what gave a brand new image for Hyderabad.

Andhraites can't Just let the city of Hyderabad go away to Telangana. "No matter what" . In the core of the city, 50% people are from the Andhra region, only as we progress towards the outskirts we see an increase in the percentage of Telanganaites.

The T politicians should come out and openly embrace the fact that Hyderabad just can't be taken away by the agitation, If freedom, self rule is what you're after, I guess sharing Hyderabad city and the revenue shouldn't be an issue.

I dare Telangana agitators to seek an expert International commission to evaluate the factual contributions to the city of Hyderabad by Telangana and Non Telangana people. My estimated guess is that, overally for what the city of Hyderabad stands today, the Telanganaites would have contributed around 10-15 %. The rest has come from Non – Telangana people, be it Andhraites, Kannadigas, Marthas etc.

  • Andhra without Hyderabad :-

Andhra and Rayalaseema without Hyderabad is equally unimaginable as Telangana without Hyderabad. For both the regions, Hyderabad is vital. Of course, Telangana  needs it a little more desperately though.

The very thought that Andhra people going back to square one, building the capital all over again from scratch is devastating. This is not the first time it has happened, it's been happening from hundreds of years. During the 300 odd years of Vijayanagar empire rule the capital  was out of Andhra, during the Kakatiya period the capital was in Warangal, during the British it was Madras. In all the cases certainly Andhras were instrumental in shaping up the capital, but never really they cared for the capital mostly the divisions were amicable. Similarly the Andhraites didn't care for Hyderabad in 1956, 1969. But not anymore, now, It's so important that they have their own fair share of Hyderabad.

If Andhraites were deprived of Hyderabad (not that I want) , the capital for Andhra would be either Kurnool or Ongole, though there are better cities like Vizag, Vijayawada they not be preferred on administrative purposes. Let me illustrate how pathetic infrastructure these cities and towns have with respect to Hyderabad, The total number of flyovers in Hyderabad are 42 and in the entire rest of AP there are two. One in Vizag and the other in Vijaywada. This gives you a rough idea how badly these cities/towns are lagging behind.

I bet it will take atleast another 30 years to develop half as much that of today's Hyderabad. ( I reckon the greedy politicians will further gulp up all the contracts and make them slow down.)

Don't trust in the packages as such , they all are a joke.

A true lesson from Chattisgarh state.

When Madhya Pradesh was bifurcated, a new state " Chattisgarh"  was formed.
Raipur was made as the new capital and the then central Govt led by BJP gave a package to develop the Capital city, for building high court, secretariat , Municipal offices etc.(90 such buildings). The BJP government gave a paltry Rs 1200 crores , When the Madhya Pradesh Government invited bids for the new High Court, the starting bid by L&T was Rs 450 Crores ( including land and construction). What will that package be useful for? I'm trying to give a picture of bad the situation will be if a new capital is asked to develop from scratch.

Let's assume a situation where in, Andhra becomes a new state with Kurnool as the capital. We will think things are settled for once and for all. Perpetually, Kurnool makes it big and we all are in a harmony. What is the guarantee that a greedy politician who is denied of some " political fortune" doesn't start a party like RRS (Rayalaseema Rastra samiti ) only to step up on his political ladder ? Will Andhraites have to be back-stabbed forever ? This is a never ending process. It stopped after the linguistic organization of states, Andhra Pradesh was formed and that should be the end of it.

I repeat, "the loss of Hyderabad to Andhraites will be irreplaceable".

  • Telangana movement and the KCR show !

Let's take a brief recap of the movement and the stalwart(s) running show.

The current Telangana Movement is an unprecedented movement which turned into an uprising only in late 2009. I strongly reject the claims that it has been an immemorial wish of people of Telangana from 60 years etc. Now that it has taken in  the form of protests of various types, including marches and hunger strikes , as well as vandalism of government property and rioting shops, in a sustained civil resistance.

Remember, After KCR formed a splinter group of TDP, KCR has raked up the separate Statehood demand in early 2000s, and has been fighting the issue since then. Sources say, KCR was the most corrupt cabinet minister, upon several complaints he was demoted to a Dy Speaker post  by Chandra Babu Naidu, where in there is no scope of corruption. This is the sole cause of rebelling the Party. (Sonia Gandhi, YSR saw an incredible oppurtunity in this to weaken the invincible TDP in Telangana, so later she started supporting KCR financially, rest is history. How KCR prostrated to Sonia, how she gave him a Cabinet post etc.

( Personally I'm also rebellious in nature,  I like KCR for this rebelling for a simple state cabinet minister to get a Central Cabinet post. Kudos KCR for being a successful rebellion ! )

The momentum was never this deep in the masses till 9 years after he launched his party, only during the elections he used this so called " Telangana sentiment"  to garner votes. However KCR's hunger strike in dec 2009 gave a fresh momentum and the statehood demand slowly started creeping into the minds of people.  To all those who think KCR is a man of values. Watch this shell-shocking footage. Truly a video speaks a million words.

                                        KCR in 1996 Assembly elections.

 Summaries of the video  :-

  •  He clearly mentioned that the vacant Jobs in Telangana should be given to anyone in the entire state.  Which means he himself is against 610 GO just 3 years before he flouted TRS.
  •  Repeatedly he used the word " us" (manam). Which means he had no issue With Andhra Pradesh state untill 1996.
  •  His slang is way different from his contemporary slang. In 1996, pretty much his slang Andhra Telugu, it's clear that he started faking Telangana Telugu accent from last few years.
  • It's apparent that, he was happy as a minister and as in the united AP (1996) . Only when he was deprived of the post he saw Telangana burning.

  • Over night second class citizens.

It's think I can forsee that scenario already, the movement the central Government buckles to the ploys of the Telangana agitators and concedes the state of Telangana with Hyderabad, the 4 million Andhra people living in and around Hyderabad will be morally underwhelmed, you know what I mean? It's the feeling you get like you've lost something, you're not in your own capital, you're in an a new place etc. Emotionally , things will change drastically.

Like visualize, When you're in a busy place, say, you're travelling in a bus and you speak in an Andhra slang on a phone or with someone else. Imagine the feeling you get with the stares, you'll undoubtedly be given a second rated " look down" kind of look. Things will change.

  •  Pressure on Andhra Entrepreneurs to give up

I seriously think that, The whole agitation is to put a check to the Andhra Entrepreneurs. Don't you think so? Talk to any agitator, he will say " Andhra investors have grabbed our Hyderabad lands, they have looted our resources". They further think that Andhra entrepreneurs like L.Rajgopal , K. Sambasiva Rao, T.Subba Rami Reddy, have come a long way only after looting the resources of Telangana. Hell !  God enlighten them.

PS :- please Google their companies, find the links, read about the description.

Let me tell you briefly how people make it big. Most of these Entrepreneurs from the state of Andhra Pradesh are from the four coastal districts krishna, Guntur, East & West Godavari. Guess why? Cause the people from these regions come from a rich agrarian background, the lands owned by them are incredibly fertile. This means they were almost a generation ahead in The educational awareness, The Entrepeneurship spirit , The westernization etc.Which obviously is not the case with the people from Rayalaseema and Telangana. ( Read my last blog for more about this)

Common don't think that today's Big companies have grown over night. That is definitely not the case with most of them, maybe with all of them. Either they were already built by the ancestors and which were later expanded and modernized by the current owners, or they have themselves made it from step one i.e building it from scratch and then making it big.

And yes! Like i've said it in my last blog why Andhra based companies have been partial towards the Andhra people in recruiting. I think their daily livelihood of most (if not all) of them will be at stake.

  • Huge loss of Jobs.

Hypothetically, if the Telangana state with Hyderabad is formed, then the odds are so slim that the " righteously " owned Jobs of the Andhraites are retained. Be it in the Government sector, Public sector or the self employed ones.

The Public sector Jobs in and around Hyderabad will have to be either removed or transferred to Andhra. There is no way that the same people can retain the same Jobs in Telangana, I'm sure they will not be sacked because most of them infact working in Hyderabad only on behalf of a posting in Andhra , which means their work is related to a region in Andhra but the place of work is in Hyderabad ( I've explained more about this in my last post). The figures are anything in between 2-3 lakhs
The scenario for the Private sector would be mixed, though the Government cannot bring direct formal rules to increase the localities share of Jobs, They will do all they can to bring pressure from the backdoors.

Remember there are lots of central government Jobs in Hyderabad, like BHEL, DRDO, ISRAT, NFC , CCMB etc. All these Central organisations have come to Andhra Pradesh, I am damn sure , they wouldn't have come to Telangana if it were a separate state since 1956. For the only reason that there would be a lack of skilled people.

The total Jobs created by IT companies in and around Hyderabad would be roughly 1 million. Out of these Andhra/Seema people own around 7-8 lakh Jobs, Telangana people own around 75k-1.25k Jobs, other Indians own around 2-3 lakh Jobs. Now tell me, why are the Telangana people not competing with Jobs in here? Is it like the MNC's like Microsoft,  Oracle etc are also against Telangana favoring Andhraites?

  •  Huge Income Loss to the Andhra

Hyderabad's economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, computer, technology, hardware manufacturing and healthcare industries. The city is India’s fourth largest exporter of software, information technology (IT) and information-technology-enabled services (ITES). A major chunk of India’s Pharmacy manufacturing industry is based in and around the city. Hyderabad Zone contributes 45 per cent of the State’s GDP.

In my earlier post,I have said that majority of the industries are owned and controlled by the people from Andhra Region, the house-hold taxes comes mostly from the localities habituated by the people from the Andhra region. For instance the Tax collection percentage from the Muslim dominated community stands to a mere 15%.

A whopping 75-80% of the city's GDP is contributed by the people from the Andhra region. The figure will remain unchanged even if the state of Telangana is formed, which means this Tax share goes into the account of Telangana which otherwise should have been used evenly through out the state.

For example :- The total Passenger volume of GMR International Airport in Hyderabad is 7,634,165, by optimistic standards the passengers from Andhra , seema would be around 5 million. On an average for a to and fro trip , a passenger pays a tax of around Rs 1500 ( Airport tax, Toll etc). The total taxes would be around Rs 7,500 million, which will obviously will go into Telangana's kitty ! I'm not counting the cargo taxes. What about the huge no of pharma, Bio, IT, construction, companies owned by Andhraites? All these taxes should belong to the entire state.

I've seen Corporators and Sarpanchs fighting for a meare monetory sanctions of about Rs 2 lakhs ,3 lakhs. Here we're talking about an amount Rs 15,000 - 20,000 crores. Yes that is the money that Andhraites would still be paying in the form of Taxes to the Telangana state per annum. Don't you think it is unfair and unjustifiable ?

  • Hard to attract new companies.

When the Hyderabad ship sinks, it will also pull down millions of Andhraites and their investments.

If Telangana state with Hyderabad is formed inevitable, Hardly any investor will bother to think about Hyderabad. Don't you think so ? Remember, The single most important factor for any key investor to do a business is to have an easy availability of " skilled people and abundant resources" . The classic example is the plummeting land prices in Hyderabad ,today they have fallen down to half of their value in 2008, which should be the other way around.

Till the year 2009, Why is it the software Companies not interested in going to Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Padesh, Bihar, North Eastern states? Why only Hyderabad, Chennai, Banglore?. Because there were skilled people in AP and  I think everyone knows from which part of AP skilled people are employed.  Yeah! No prizes for guessing.

I mean it's not just the Telangana people who will be at the receiving end, even the Non-Telanganaites,especially the Andhraites followed by Gujaratis, Marathis and all those who have invested in the city of Hyderabad, in the form of Real estates, Property acquisitions, Infrastructure investments etc, their profits will be at stake. Trust me, Once this happens, the development will almost come to a stand still. It will remain unchanged for a decade.

If you were to go by the current statics, most of the Real estate ventures, Property Contracts, infrastructure contracts are held by the people of Andhra, All these have to suffer, remember it's not just a blow a few business big shots, but to all the employees of these organizations.

Tough Time for relocating Andhraites !

For those Andhraites who are left with the only option to relocate or those who wish to relocate, will have to deal with this Herculean Task. Let me tell you why.

There are around 1 million families in Hyderabad whose roots are traced to Coastal Andhra or Rayalaseema. These one million families hold around 1.2 – 1.3 million Jobs in the City of Hyderabad. Which includes the Private sector, Public Sector and some entrepreneurs.

If not all , many of them will have to relocate to the new capital. It will be so hard for them to move out of a safe heaven and start building a new life, new home from scratch. Among all the Job holders, the government employees will be the hardest hit. They have completely adopted themselves to the Hyderabadi environment, their children, their properties etc. It's not an easy task to abruptly deal with a new place . Despite the fact that, most of them have snapped their ancestral heritage, be it the native village, family properties etc.

It will be like throwing yourself into an alien location. You know what I mean?

My personal solution :- I strongly feel that, there is no point in keeping the state united or maintaining the Status Quo. Some sort of a solution should be given which is acceptable by most of the stakeholders. The chances in future that a similar demand for Rayalaseema region cannot be ruled out like the one in 1953. So the division should be in such a way that  Two districts from Telangana ( Khammam, Nalagonda) should be merged with Andhra Pradesh and Two districts from Rayalaseema (Anantapur, Kurnool) should be merged with Telangana to form Telangana pradesh , so that Hyderabad is in the borders of both the states. Hyderabad should be made as a common capital city with 60% revenue to Telangana and 40% revenue to Andhra. On the lines of Chandigarh. This way it might be acceptable by Andhraites and partly by Telanganaites. ( This is just what I think, might not be feasible though)

Bottomline :-  Telangana people are agitating for a separate state, I am totally fine with that, as long as they do it democratically. I also understand that the movement has become a mass movement with the popular support from almost all the corners of the region. But I can't take it for a second with the Telangana people claiming that they've built Hyderabad with " The sweat, The blood" of their ancestors. Facts are Facts about Hyderabad and the GDP of Hyderabad. As long as the Telangana people don't compromise and come to an amicable agreement about this, the agitation will be meaningless and helpless. The so called unfair job share, uneven water share, biased  development of Telangana can be mended with will, but it will irrevocable for the Andhra people if they loose Hyderabad.
